Virtues and characteristics of Dhu al-Qi’dah

One of the most remarkable months is Dhu al-Qi’dah. It is the eleventh month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, one of four months that Allah calls “the sacred months.” They are Dhu al-Qa’dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram, Rajab. This proves that Muslims must exert more effort this month to receive Allah’s blessings and seek forgiveness.

Here are some of the virtues that Dhu al-Qi’dah is distinguished by:
– It is known for Muslims that fighting during these months is prohibited as Allah commanded them. Dhu al-Qi’dah is called so that the Muslims stop fighting during this month as it is the first one of the sacred months. Allah said, “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)

The rewards of the good deeds:

– During this month, Allah doubles the rewards for those who worship Allah with true devotion. This is a sign of a good Muslim who looks for the times when Allah prefers to do more to attain His pleasure and satisfaction. Allah says in the Quran: “And whoever honors the symbols of Allah—indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:32) The true Muslim has to give charity to those who are in need and stop his wrong deeds. As for ending the year with Dhu al-Qa’dah, Dhu al-Hijjah is proof that the Muslim has to remember what he has done during the year. He has to think about how to replace the sins that he has committed with other right deeds.

– During this month, Muslims should stop committing injustice. Allah emphasized that committing injustice is prohibited during this month to stop people from falling into the pre-Islamic era’s violations of the sanctity of these months. Allah said, “So do not wrong yourselves during them.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36). This doesn’t mean that committing injustice is permitted in the other months.
– This is to make sure that doing so during that month is considered among the major sins that Muslims can fall into during these sacred months. Also, the one should be fair with himself as with others. This is when he stops committing sins and bad deeds, the minor, and the major ones. Allah said, “And whoever inclines to evil actions therein or to do wrong; We will make him a taste of a painful punishment.” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:25)

Performing Umrah during this month:

– Performing Umrah during this month is sunnah. It has been narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon Him) has performed four Umrahs during Dhu al-Qa’dah. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed four Umrahs, all of them in Dhu al-Qa’dah, except the one which was with his Hajj: An Umrah from Hudaybiyyah in Dhu al-Qa’dah, an Umrah from the following year in Dhu al-Qa’dah, an Umrah from Ji’rana where he distributed the spoils of Hunayn in Dhu al-Qa’dah, and an Umrah with his Hajj.” (Agreed upon)

Get ready to perform Hajj:

– It is a great chance for Muslims to prepare themselves for performing Hajj. This month is among the months that follow Ramadan and preceded Dhu al-Hijjah. Therefore, the Muslim is still attached to the spiritualties of Ramadan. This way, he is somehow prepared for Dhu al-Hijjah, in which Hajj is performed. The Muslim has to find out what he missed in Ramadan of good deeds and prepare himself well to visit Ka’ba with pure soul.

The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah:

– There are some historical events that this month has witnessed. One of the historical events is the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. This treaty was assigned near Mecca between Muhammad (peace be upon him), representing the state of Medina, and the tribe of the Quraysh in Mecca in March 628 (corresponding to Dhu al-Qi’dah, AH 6).

– There was a tension between the two cities. This treaty was assigned to bring between the two cities for about ten years. Before this treaty, the Muslims left Mecca and migrated to Medina. This is because of the bad treatment of the people of Quraysh by the Muslims. During their stay in Medina, they were thinking of coming back to their hometown. Their best chance to go back is to perform Umrah or Hajj. They dreamed of going back to Mecca to circulate Ka’ba. There were 1,500 Muslims in Medina. They put on the clothes of Umrah, and once they arrived, they were forbidden from performing the pillars of Islam.

The pledge of the tree:

– As a result, the tree was pledged. The Muslims have sworn to support the Prophet (peace be upon him) and fight with him against the people of Mecca who prevented them from entering it. This pledge was held under the tree, and Allah was pleased by the persons who attended this pledge. This pledge has a great effect on the people of Quraysh.

– While they know about this pledge, they agreed to let the Muslims enter Mecca the next year to perform Hajj. It has been narrated by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih that: “The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) go out during the time of Hudaybiyyah from Medina with a number of over a thousand of his companions. When they arrived at Dhu al-Hulaifa, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) marked and prepared the sacrificial animals and entered the state of Ihram.”
